Spring clean your office in 5 simple steps

New research has revealed that some 57 per cent of workers admit to judging a colleague based on the cleanliness of their workspace and nearly half say they have been “appalled” by a dirty office. As a new financial year is ushered in, Spring is the perfect time for businesses to give the office a good revamp by organising the clutter and blitzing the winter remains.

It’s understandable that the workplace can get a little messy at times, but recent research conducted by Adecco has revealed that employees are quite unforgiving when it comes to the cleanliness of their office environment. A survey of 1000 workers found that the majority would judge a co-worker on the cleanliness of their desk space, and almost half have been “appalled” by how messy a colleague’s’ office is,  with most blaming it on pure laziness.

Organisation expert Peter Walsh suggests that every professional should first ask themselves what they want from the office space, and whether it is meeting their needs. After that has been established, different zones should then be created, such as a library area for research, a print area for copying and printing and a storage area for supplies and filing. This will provide the foundations for a more efficient use of space.

Once the office is more organised, here’s five simple steps for the most effective Spring clean.

1) Desk management: “The only stuff in the radius of your arms should be the stuff you need immediately,” Mr Walsh told Forbes Magazine. That means that beyond your computer or laptop, diary and stationary set, there shouldn’t be a great deal left  to clutter the desk. Reducing paper clutter is the most difficult aspect of effective desk management, and careful consideration should be taken as to whether the piles of documents on your desk need to be there. Organising your computer by arranging icons and files will also help manage your immediate environment.

2) Storage: Creating storage areas can substantially reduce clutter and improve the presentation of the company.  From coat racks to filing cabinets, boxes to drawers, there are endless ways of creating better storage space and in doing so, reducing the number of things lying around and cluttering up the office.

3) Deep Clean: As the winter season finally retreats, it is about time that the office gets a good deep clean, blitzing the dusty remains and welcoming a fresh summer season. The only way to get deep when in the office is to clear things out, which means emptying desk areas and getting anti-bac cloths around the entire area. Finishing off with a good vacuuming will ensure the remnants of your clean are permanently disposed.

4) Inside and out: The windows are a vital part of the Spring clean, although they can often be overlooked. The opaque nature of the office windows means that dirt and grubbiness can be easily spotted, but equally as easy to treat, with a good polish inside and out.

5) Keeping it clean: A post-Spring clean office feels tremendous, but to keep the workspace in a good shape, it is important to administer regular cleans.
